Milwaukee Public Library has a wonderful collection of local newspapers on microfilm. And great librarians in the Humanities room to help with your research.
A trip to the Milwaukee County Historical Society http://www.milwaukeehistory.net/ is a must. Naturalization papers, wills, and biographical sketches are just some of their holdings. And the interior was used in a bank heist scene in the Johnny Depp movie Public Enemies.
