Speaker: Jean Wilcox Hibben

“It’s about Time! Pacing the Presentation”
(Saturday, 21 August, Session S-407, 8:00 - 9:00 a.m.)

Jean shares:
I have been involved in family history research since the late 1970s and am the staff trainer for the Corona (CA) Family History Center. I teach genealogy for the Soboba band of the LuiseƱo Indian tribe, serve as president for both the Corona (CA) Genealogical Society and the Southern California Chapter of the Association of Professional Genealogists, and serve as secretary of the Genealogical Speakers Guild. I am a Board Certified genealogist with a doctorate in folklore and a Masters degree in speech communication.

I will be presenting “It’s about Time! Pacing the Presentation,” focusing on keeping one’s genealogical (or any other) speaking program within the allotted time limit. This is an important issue for speaking at seminars, especially when others are scheduled for the next time slot in the same location, but is also an issue in society venues where there may be room rental, facility closing time, other items on the program, etc. to consider. I will discuss
reasons for keeping within the time limitations (the problems of going both over- or being under-time) and will provide some ideas for shortening or lengthening a presentation, as needed. After thirteen years of teaching public speaking in Southern California colleges and universities, and educating about the same topic in private venues for ten years before that, I have developed some hints that should prove helpful to those who have problems pacing their presentations and I am excited to share them in this arena, surrounded by some of the greatest in the field.

I am pleased to be sponsored by the Genealogical Speakers Guild for this 8:00 a.m.on Saturday. I hope that folks will drop by the GSG booth in the Exhibit Hall to learn more about our services and benefits. We are a two-fold organization in that we can be helpful to those wishing to book speakers while also being a networking and educational group for those already involved in doing genealogy speaking (or who wish to do so in the future). The guild’s website is www.genealogicalspeakersguild.org and it provides a location where members can promote their own speaking businesses.

See you in Knoxville: it’s going to be an amazing experience!
